Seriously seriously amazing. Better than Taylor at his best? I don't mean longevity.

Smith doesn't stand a chance to be fair, but well done to him.

I watched the 1/4 final and MVG still doesn’t have the consistent ruthlessness of Taylor imho. Great, great player though

MVG has won 19 titles this year, more than the rest of them together. He is utterly ruthless. as was Taylor in his day. The top 10 say 20 years ago would get thrashed by the current top 100 players today. Haven't seen Gary play that badly for an age. Smith does stand a chance if MVG has one of the few off days he has had this year. First time ever the final will be between 2 players under 30. Should be a great final, but I think MVG will win it.

About from about half hour when Smith started to come back into it I thought it was a pretty dire final tbh. MVG didn’t seem to be at one with himself, still a great player though.

The atmosphere seemed quite muted or are Sky toning it down?

So Phil Taylor would get thrashed by the top 100 today?????? think he was about 30 years ago and deffo won the world title 20 years ago and reckon the top half dozen from that era would still be contenders now.

Darts like a few other games rely on bottle to a great degree as well as ability and top guys from 20 30 40 yr ago all had bottle in spades esp after a few pints haha.

i remember playing against him on the bdo youth tour, when he was around 15-16 and the cauliflower was averaging high 90s then. just a born winner, won the welsh open, dutch masters and the winmau world masters at like 16 in the same year against alot of (now) pdc players remember bobby george telling me this guy will be a 5 time world champion like barney and well he wasnt wrong amazing player.

Whats his average compared to Taylors at his best which can go some way towards answering OP question, not a definitive answer but a reasonable guideline to an age old dif era whos the best ever player question.

Well he has the world record Bill if that helps?

Taylor I doubt is top 3. But for longevity, there is no matching Taylor... yet. And maybe if he had been pushed then he would also have that record.

taylor is undoubtedly the greatest player of all time with what he achieved trophy wise . But in terms of consistent averages in todays era taylor couldnt live with van gerwins 102 - 105 averages every game. Back in the days where taylor won his first 7-8 titles he was at a guess only averaging around 95 which was amazing back then, but the standard now a 100 average will probably get you to the quarter finals.

One of the lads posted that MVG has averaged over a ton in about 20 WC matches in a row.

That's mental.

MVG definitely playing better competition, imo.

Yup that's why I say averages only a guideline and think your "if he had been pushed" comment sums it up,all the time I have watched over the years if one guy is totally playing shite oppo just goes through the motions and won with pretty poor stats but when one guy hits the big numbers the top men usually react with even better form.

As said here also todays guys a helluva lot more consistent and deffo not pissheads like the glory days of Jocky Eric and big Cliff haha and I am damn sure if Taylor was in his thirties forties now he would raise his game to match the guy standing opposite him.

Career Averages
Player Average Matches recorded
England Phil Taylor 101.28 774
Netherlands Michael van Gerwen 101.06 753
Scotland Gary Anderson 97.95 612
England Rob Cross 97.86 232
Scotland Peter Wright 97.06 557

Very good but timing is usually the winner, remember MVG v Anderson. MVG went 180, 180,and missed double 12 for a 9 darter, with Gary left on 170, who took it out.

Thx for that JC - I thought Taylor’s averages were slightly (very slightly) better.

I think it should also be taken into account that when Taylor first came to prominence was pre PDC and anyone outside the top couple of players was struggling to make a living out of the game. The money now is very attractive and most in the bigger tournaments are pro’s earning a fair crack. That ensures they practice longer and harder so inevitably get better.

The MVG PT debate is akin to the Messi CR7 one - just enjoy the feast!

Part of the reason the PDC was formed. Too many players were getting into the World Champs and other tourneys because they could pick up ranking points at alsorts of events round the world. The “pros” were having to playing small events in god knows where just to pick up enough points to qualify. It was not profitable for many. Nobody, apart from Barry Hearn maybe, could have seen the explosion that was to follow and now players are ranked at the top by performances in selected events.

Once in that elite group the gravy flows but also so does the quality!

But do you think MVG could move over to the BDO and be as succesful?

The pressure of the Lakeside might be too much? :D
